Origin story of Our Founders', Jiahao (Louis) Lu,

AquaByte was born after Louis traveled to Kenya in the summer of 2024. While the trip began as a luxury safari experience, it quickly revealed a stark contrast—the severe lack of access to clean drinking water among local communities.

One moment that deeply moved us was seeing a young child, no older than four, struggling to carry four containers of turbid, muddy water. When we asked our guide why this was happening, he explained that locals often collect dirty water, let it sit overnight so the sediment settles, and then drink the clearer portion from the top.

We were shocked—not only by the method but also by the sight of plastic waste floating nearby and women washing clothes at the same riverbank. That experience opened our eyes to the urgent need for affordable, reliable water purification.

According to UNICEF nearly 9.9 million people in Kenya lack access to basic, safe drinking water. It made us realize how easily we take clean water for granted. That trip was a wake-up call, showing us just how critical it is to ensure access to safe, drinkable water—a basic need for survival.
